ROHACELL® - Weight Loss for Structural Components

Evonik offers a number of amazing materials for making motor vehicles lighter, without sacrificing safety or comfort. Sandwich components with coverings made of fiber composite materials weigh considerably less than their steel counterparts and offer far more freedom of design. ROHACELL® by Evonik is a structural foam that makes it possible to enhance considerably the performance of such materials in terms of light construction, rigidity, and cost savings. The foam material is used as a core together with fiber-reinforced epoxy resin coatings. The sandwich core material ROHACELL®, which is well known in the aviation and space industry and has long been used in car racing, is increasingly playing an important role in the mass production of motor vehicles.

Among foam materials, ROHACELL® stands out for its ideal proportion of weight to mechanical properties and optimal heat distortion resistance. Evonik will demonstrate these properties in an exhibit on exterior body parts, which also includes the impressive rear spoiler of the Lotus racing car sponsored by the Evonik Automotive Industry Team. The Golf displayed at the FISITA features a variety of parts made of the lightweight material, which makes it over 60 kilograms lighter than models built with conventional steel parts. The weight difference between a conventional hatchback weighing 23 kg and its ROHACELL®-based counterpart that weighs in at just 3.84 kg is astonishing and represents a weight reduction of more than 80 percent. The hood also weighs 60 percent less, and the outer roof cover, doors, underbody panel, and trunk floor panel have contributed their part to the weight reduction.
