Sealing Applications
Besides the applications of braided packings made of PTFE impregnated and oiled P84 multifilament used in stuffing boxes of pumps and reactors, nonwoven are used as a seal on a new version of automotive oil filters. The filter cartridge is fully made out of plastic material and contains no metal. The P84 sealing is used because of its stability at high temperature and chemical resistance against hot oil. The fixing of the P84 seal onto the cartridge is done by melting the polyamide into the polyimide felt ring. As the temperature applied is in the range of app. 250 °C the thermostable P84 is the material of choice. The advantage of this new concept of oil filters is the environmental friendly disposal of the used cartridges by combustion without the need of seperating the metal housing before burning.

Molded Parts
P84 powder is manufactured from several grades of polyimide solution by customers. The powder is then converted to moulded parts either by hot compression moulding (HCM), by hot coining, by RAM extrusion or by direct forming at high pressures. The P84 powder may be used in pure form, as a filler for PTFE or as a matrix resin with several fillers (e.g. : graphite, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), PTFE, Bronze,…)
The powder and also the moulded parts out of a fully imidized polyimide resin are amorphous, non-melting, thermally stable and show excellent mechancial properties.
Inspec Fibres offers the possibility to supply tailor made polymer solutions.
