Aviation

Products from the product group Aircraft Construction Materials and ROHACELL® are mainly used in this field.

Lightweight Construction in Aviation

The classical requirement to be met in aviation is low weight combined with optimum mechanical properties. It therefore comes as no surprise that ROHACELL® is found in fiber composite components in precisely this area, from winglets, loading doors, landing gear doors, pressure bulkhead stringers, slotted flaps and stringers in the engine cowling to folding tables in the passenger cabin.

What tips the scales in favor of ROHACELL® A, WF and XT are their extremely good weight-related compressive and shear strength, even under permanent dynamic load, as well as their freedom of design, high temperature and creep compression resistance. Weight also plays a crucial role when it comes to aircraft glazing. The favourable combination of high optical and mechanical properties with low specific weight have made PLEXIGLAS® GS the material of choice for decades.
Typical applications are cabin windows, cockpit glazing and glider canopies, but also helicopter glazing and canopies, and windshields for fighter planes.

Rotor Blades for Helicopters

are further prominent applications for ROHACELL®, which is employed as a monolithic core or combined with paper-based laminate honeycombs to give support and shape to the carbon-fiber composites.

The durability of the rotor blade with ROHACELL® is guaranteed for the lifetime of the helicopter.

Fighter Planes

Stretched PLEXIGLAS® GS 249 is excellently suited for canopies and windshields in fighter planes. The combination of excellent optics, long-term behavior and mechanical stability against collision with birds, for example, has made this material the ideal choice for this application for any years.

Glider Canopies

PLEXIGLAS® GS 245 has been the selected material for this application for many years. Its unsurpassed properties in this field are excellent, distortion-free optics, maximum transmission combined with UV protection for the pilot, and low weight combined with high rigidity.

Aircraft Seats

These are heavy-duty structural components. EUROPLEX® F 3 not only has the required fire rating - with its high impact strength and chemical resistance, it has all the prerequisites for a long service life.

Cabin Windows

Pressurized cabin windows are safety-relevant coponents exposed to high mechanical and thermal stress. For years, the aviation industrie has been relying on windows made from PLEXIGLAS® GS 249.

Door Panel

Door panels and door frames are complex structural elements that must meet high requirements. The materials used for these components with a large surface area also have to comply with the OSU heat release test, apart from all the other demands for impact strength, chemical resistance and formability. EUROPLEX® PPSU offers all these properties and is therefore successfully used in this field.

Folding Tables

These are very heavy-duty items in aircaft. Whatever the load placed on EUROPLEX® F3 - bulky briefcases, hot foods or drinks - this material offers excellent impact strength paired with high thermal stability and chemical resistance for a long service life.
